MakeItInDesign Summer School Diaries (Week 3)
Last week #3 saw another super-cool selection of briefs from the Design school and I thought: WHOA! This is the real stuff. I had the most fun ever playing with the Advanced Track theme "Deep Summer Psychedelic'.
The colour palettes and photographs I found for inspiration mesmerized me so much that I put them together on a Pinterest Board for the exploration phase and to go back later.
I researched what 'psychedelic artwork' would deliver as key points to work from: Source: WIKIPEDIA
Fantastic, metaphysical and surrealistic subject matter
Kaleidoscopic, fractal or paisley patterns
Bright and/or highly contrasting colors
Extreme depth of detail or stylization of detail. Also so called Horror vacui style.
Morphing of objects and/or themes and sometimes collage
Phosphenes, spirals, concentric circles, diffraction patterns, and other entoptic motifs
Repetition of motifs
Innovative typography and hand-lettering, including warping and transposition of positive and negative spaces
Armed with a rather vague-wild idea in my head, I started building a few designs taking off from an acrylic painting of mine, which I photographed and enhanced with both an Iphone App and Illustrator. For the 2nd image, I layered something else into the background - a photograph of Berlin's main train station I took in 2012. I really love the structure behind the colour mesh. I used Adobe Illustrator to build a pattern of a 4-way reflection of the painting and played with different scale options before weaving it into a wavy texture to create the line work and gradient look.
I really like how fresh it turned out and could see this on a variety of products.
